Hi there, folks! I'm happy to be sharing photos of our main owner's bathroom today. This soft and serene bathroom is a remodel that was completed by the folks who lived here before us. Because our home is 91 years old, the bathrooms must have needed quite the overhaul to bring them into modern standards.
I don't have any photos of the bathroom "before", but based on what our 3rd floor bathroom looks like, I can imagine. It was probably 1950's era fixtures with cramped space and old linoleum tile floors. But today? It's a beautiful, serene, relaxing space with a spacious layout and pretty, feminine fixtures. Let's take a look.
There used to be a wall where that opening is now, and there used to be a door to the hallway where the sink and mirror are now. So the bathroom used to be much smaller. During the remodel, the toilet and shower area were bumped out into the adjacent bedroom, and the door was closed off, making this an ensuite with the owner's bedroom.
This gorgeous bathtub is a fiberglass reproduction piece. It's quite the showstopping feature in the room! Love these feet on the tub!
The room is very large, considering it's in a 91 year old house.
The lighting in here is gorgeous, with a west-facing window. During the morning, the light is bright and indirect. During the afternoon and evening, the light is more direct, and very warm.
The chandelier is another dramatic feature, and I have to admit it made a big impression on me when we were touring the house the first time. I know you shouldn't make a home purchase decision based on things like paint colors and light fixtures, but if those things are impressive, then it sure does help you fall in love with the house!
The previous owners had a penchant for mirrors, and especially old mirrors. This bathroom has three old mirrors on the walls in various places. They're all gorgeous with lovely detailed frames.
The good news is that they are so pretty to look at.
The bad news is that they are all old - like, really old - and they're cloudy and streaky and it's impossible to see yourself clearly in them. So I keep a small vanity mirror nearby for when I really need to see for makeup and so forth.
I love the vanity with the marble top and chrome fixtures. It's a little disappointing that the marble has these large brown stains ... I've been searching for a method to clean that up, but haven't found anything yet. Do you have any advice for me? I certainly don't want to make the problem worse!
The bathtub area really is the focal point of the room.
Probably not unexpectedly, the shutters stay closed a lot of the time for privacy reasons.
The sheer fabric on the window is a simple swag looped over two curtain tie-backs, one on each corner. Simple, simple, simple!
I haven't done any real decorating in here since we moved in... just placed a few simple items on the radiator and on the cabinet that we brought in. The beauty of the room pretty much speaks for itself, I think.
The cabinet that we purchased from Ikea a long time ago is calling out to be painted white, I think. Or maybe grey with white highlights. What do you think? The previous owners had a gorgeous antique lawyer's bookcase here where they kept towels and other pretty things on display through the glass doors. I don't have a budget for such a beautiful antique, so an Ikea hack is going to have to suffice for a while!
I'm looking for something "just right" to put on the wall above the brown cabinet, and will update the towels to better reflect the colors of the bedroom (spa blue and mineral green), but for now the plain beige towels are serving the purpose.
I feel like we won the lottery when we found this house available with the interior already mostly brought up to date. Buying a 91 year old house knowing you *don't* have to remodel the bathroom or kitchen - well, that's quite a find! We can focus on the yard and gardens and just enjoy the inside of the house as we found it!
Thanks for visiting Harmony Hills today. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to add "just right" decorative items to this already pretty bathroom.

Take a peek at our sunroom, my favorite room in the house.
I'd be so pleased if you would follow me on Facebook and Pinterest!

ReplyDeleteHi Debra, yes, you're right - the older houses have so much charm built right in! Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting, I hope you'll be back again soon!
DeleteOh my goodness, I would want to soak the day way! Love, love, love that round mirror! Blessings, Cecilia
ReplyDeleteHi Cecilia, thanks so much for stopping by! Funny, we've lived here almost a full year and I haven't yet used the bathtub! Unless you count bathing the dogs. :-) It does look pretty though, doesn't it? LOL!
DeleteYour bathroom is just lovely! I love all the finishes and your tub is absolutely divine! I'm wondering if a pro might be able to buff the stains out of your marble? Might be worth a try.
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa, thanks so much for visiting and your kind comments. I had hoped something like that would work for the marble, but unfortunately the stains go quite deep into the marble, not just on the surface. Boo! I'm embracing them as part of the "old house" charm, even though the vanity is actually not old. It's all in how you look at it, right? :-) Hope you'll drop by again!
