Our Gardens

The yard and gardens at our home are a work in progress.   Our property is just over 1/2 acre, approximately 120' wide by 200' deep or so.  We have a corner lot, with a suburban street in front of our house (west side) and on the south side running along our property.

Here's a rough drawing of our yard, showing relative positions of all the different areas, as it looked in August 2015 when we purchased our home.

Our yard slopes downhill from the left (north) side to the right (south) side, and also slopes backward from the back of the house down to the back right corner of the yard.  Our front yard is kinda-sorta flat, until you hit the tree line on the south side, and then it dramatically falls off. At the front southwest corner, the grade difference is about 6'... at the back near the driveway, the grade difference is more like 10-12'.  

When we moved in, the south tree line from the front to the back was a big jungle of mature trees completely filled with wild grapevine and honeysuckle vines.   Clearing up that jungle is going to be a multi-year project, for sure!

The foundation beds surrounding the house are in need of some help. Many of the shrubs are old and overgrown.   The soil is quite compacted, and from the looks of it, it's been quite a while since a gardener lived in this house.
